Toute l’équipe des Ateliers Fourwinds vous prie de bien vouloir nous excuser, mais pour des raisons diverses et variées, depuis les « années Covid », nous n’avons pas pu relancer un programme de résidence.

La reprise du programme sera annoncée dès que possible.

A pause without residency

The team at the Ateliers Fourwinds is very sorry but for different reasons, since the « Covid years », we have been enable to start our residency program.

We will announce the start of the new program as soon as possible.

24 weeks, 24 artists in residence (plus two partners), ten nationalities + three workshops and an exhibition… Season 2016 has been busy indeed! And so lovely… We here, the permanent ones, have all felt (and were told too which is very pleasant) that the artists staying this summer really made interesting (or even life changing) shifts in their works and creative vision… For us, this is our biggest reward and we are very grateful to them for sharing their work, their passions, their enthusiasm with us and other residents in this blessed place… all our lives feel enriched and our souls nurtured!

24 semaines, 24 artistes en résidence (plus deux conjoints), dix nationalitiés + trois stages et une exposition… la saison 2016 a été bien remplie! Et si charmante… Nous, les résidents permanents avons tous ressenti (et on nous l’a aussi souvent dit ce qui fait très plaisir) que ceux qui sont passés par ici cette année ont fait des découvertes importantes (et pour certains véritablement essentielles) dans leur travail et leur vision artistique… Ceci, pour nous, est notre vraie récompense et nous leur sommes très reconnaissants d’avoir partagé ainsi avec nous et les autres résidents dans ce lieu voué à cela, leur travail, leurs passions, leur enthousiasme… toutes nos vies en ont été enrichies et nos âmes nourries!

Our thanks go to Christine Read Australia who produced some beautiful paintings of the area, Jan Dunlop (and lovely partner Jim) Australia who was brave enough to introduce 3d in her 2d works for the first time with astonishing results, Jill Douglas who organized here 2 fun workshops for her painting students in L.A.: Vivian, Carol, Ann, Jenny, Sam, Roxanne and our very own Lynda (and has decided to move here… beginning in a few weeks in our flat), to Emma Rochester Australia and Janell Wysock U.S.A. who met here to laugh (I think so anyway as I can’t explain it otherwise) and start a weaving project about mountains (carrying loom and all at the top of the Alpilles!), Ed Nadeau (and the delightful Pam) from the U.S.A. who nearly moved here they loved it so and walked away with recipes from our fab butcher and many many sketches and photos that Ed is now turning into paintings, Emma Rochester again but with another hat as she decided to stay on until January to paint and write her PhD here, Rahima Jackson from Australia (down the road from us there too funny) who launched into clay mixes unknown to her and produced such beautiful work she has ended with an exhibition in Avignon, Aida Revol from Paris who is a dancer and Sabrina Marsili from Italy who is an comedian met here to birth a choreography that we staged -in its « work in progress » stage- around the pool one sweet summer evening, David Marchandise Belgium and Zuzana Hudackova Slovakia our newlyweds of the season who are looking for a place to settle David’s potting wheel and Zuzana’s photography displays and yoga classes…  wanted to test Provence and only time will tell where they will drop their bags & make roots, Katinka Fennema Holland, faithfully returning here for the 14th consecutive year to battle with her chunks of wood and turn them into elegant finished sculptures, Rachel Crozier U.K. who came to do some landscape photography and arrived (quite pale!) in the middle of the worst autumn heat wave… she braved the elements and brought back some pristine views of the our village and our hills, Eveline Kuhlman from up the road in Avignon came for Ursula’s autumn stage but wanted to extend it into a more full on experience by staying here and last -but not least- the first two residents from our new residency partnership with the Ville d’Arles: Anna-Eva Berge and Fabrice Leroux who made the most interesting light/sculpture installations in one of the studios… very exciting!

Good bye lovely people, its been a delight meeting you all, let’s keep in touch and do come visit / play in the studios if in our area again… The Gods permitting…  Fourwinds should still be there! Ursula, Jeanne, Sabine and Vianney

Le retour des beaux jours et des fleurs est bien là… quel bonheur de le vivre ici en Provence ! That’s it, spring is here for good and what a treat it is to be here in Provence to enjoy it!

Comme l’an passé deux stages avec modèle vivant, sculpture et dessin, vous sont proposés par nos professeurs à l’année et même si celui d’Ursula est déjà plus ou moins rempli, il sera répété à l’automne (n’hésitez pas à nous contacter d’ores et déjà pour réserver). J’ai demandé aux deux enseignantes de définir la différence entre un stage et des cours à l’année, voici leurs commentaires… au plaisir de vous retrouver ici bientôt

PS Il y a encore quelques places disponibles pour faire une retraite artistique à Fourwinds cet été en mai, juillet, août et septembre. N’hésitez pas à nous contacter si le coeur vous en dit !

As per last year, two workshops with live models are coming up in sculpture and life drawing. These will be run by our year round teachers here, Ursula and Marie Pierre. (Ursula’s one is nearly full but will be repeated in the fall so please let us know of your interest already.)
I have asked both teachers to define what difference they see in a workshop vs their normal classes and below are their musings. Hope to see you soon here…

STAGE DE SCULPTURE AVEC MODELE VIVANT

5 matinées du 11 au 15 Mai €175
Modeler dans l’argile pendant cinq jours consécutifs avec un modèle qui tient la pose durant tout ce temps offre de nombreux avantages. D’une part, nous avons la chance de travailler avec des modèles interessées par notre travail et qui apportent une belle énergie à ces scéances quotidiennes. D’autre part, le fait de travailler en continu permet aux étudiants de totalement se plonger dans leur travail et d’explorer plus en profondeur puis d’incorporer cela dans leurs créations tous les jours plus intensément.
Peu importe comment les étudiants travaillent, que leur approche soit réaliste ou plus abstraite quand ils exécutent d’après modèle, leur observation est aiguisée et leurs doigts  transmettent cela par le biais de l’argile à leurs œuvres.
A la fin de la semaine nous sommes tous fatigués d’une bonne fatigue, tous ont progressé et les résultats sont là pour le prouver ! Même les débutants sont impressionés tant ils ont appris à mieux  » voir « ! Cette expérience est aussi excitante pour eux que pour moi…
J’aime terminer ainsi une saison d’enseignement et j’aime à croire que chacun se retrouvera plus riches d’observations quand les cours hebdomadaires reprendront à l’automne.

SCULPTURE WORKSHOP WITH LIVE MODEL

Modelling in clay a figure for five consecutive days, from a live model holding the same pose, has many advantages over a weekly sculpture class. We are fortunate to have models who are wonderfully cooperative and interested in learning too, and who add their energy to the daily sessions.
It is uninterrupted time which allows the students to really concentrate on their work and to explore further how to incorporate  what they see into their sculpture. They dedicate all their energy to this alone which gives an intensity which increases with each day.
No matter how the students work individually in class, be it academic realism or searching for more simplified form, when they are working from a model, it is the chance to sharpen their observation power and transform it through their fingers into a clay figure.
With the intensity of the work everyone is usually very tired by the end of the week, but in a very good way, each one knowing that he/she has made progress in one way or another and the evidence is there in their sculpture! Even beginners are amazed at how much they have learned  » to see »!
It is exciting to share this experience for both the students and the teacher!
I like to end the season with a workshop in May so everyone goes off for the summer in tune to observe even more and also to begin the season in September to get » their noses back on the grindstone ».

STAGE DE DESSIN AVEC MODELE VIVANT

Jeudi 11 de 9h à 12h – Vendredi 12 de 9h à 12h
Samedi 13 de 9h à 12h avec repas tiré du sac à partager pour prolonger ce bel échange !!
A Fourwinds se déroule régulièrement un atelier avec modèle, dédié au dessin d’anatomie et à l’apprentissage du croquis.
Le croquis est cette esquisse d’étude qui allie l’observation, la réflexion et la construction de ce que l’on observe.
Un peu de rigueur, certes mais… pour éduquer l’œil à l’essentiel et pouvoir, à terme, être autonome et libre avec sa pratique du dessin !

Pour la deuxième année, je vous propose un stage sur une semaine pour vous initier, découvrir et/ou perfectionner cette pratique en  vous immergeant dans le dessin !!
On travaille en atelier, 5 demi journées de 3h, on rythme le temps pour aiguiser son observation, on est guidé pour être corrigé et améliorer son aisance. Le modèle vivant rythme la cadence (avec un roulement de modèles pour varier l’étude) les outils et moyens proposés ouvrent les possibilités (craies, fusains, crayons, peinture, fil de fer et autres tentatives). On essaie, se reprend, expérimente et, quoi qu’il arrive, on est surpris par ses capacités!!
Oui, le dessin s’apprend et est accessible à tous !

LIFE DRAWING WORKSHOP

Saturday 13th from 9h till 12h followed by a shared lunch to round up the week together!!
At Fourwinds I regularly give a life drawing class dedicated more specifically to anatomy and the sketching process. Sketching is a study which combines observation, mindfulness and a construction of what is observed. Yes it is a true apprenticeship during which we train the eye to perceive what is essential and, although it could seem somewhat tedious, it is what will bring us freedom and independence in the drawing process further down the track.
For the second year running I will offer a week long workshop open to beginners as well as more advanced students, a total immersion in drawing!!
We work atelier style, during 5 half days during which time will be monitored to enhance observation skills, with plenty of guidance and helpful hints to free you up. The live model also sets a rhythm (there will be a turnover of models for our pleasure) and a variety of art materials (chalk pastels, charcoal, paint but also wire and other interesting surprises) should open up new avenues in experimentation.
A lot has to do with trying, trying again, experimenting and, whatever the results, usually we are delighted by the results!! Indeed drawing is available to all!!
